What $500, $2,000 and $5,000 a month of SEO actually buy you
A monthly SEO fee is a stack of hours, drafts and links. We priced three budgets against market rates, so you can check what your money covers before you sign.

How much SEO fits into a small monthly fee
Very little, and the number you see on the invoice decides which kind of little. Roughly 63% of businesses pay between $500 and $5,000 per month market, so all three budgets in this article sit inside the normal range. What differs is the list of things each one can pay for at the same time.
A month of SEO is built from three cost lines: expert hours, written pages and links. Each has a market price, so any budget can be converted into a shopping list and compared with what a proposal promises.
Five hundred dollars: one job, and no room for a second
Freelancers average about $1,350 a month market, so $500 is well under one freelancer's usual retainer. It pays for a fraction of a person.
The arithmetic is short. A mid-tier writer with SEO experience charges $150 to $375 for a 1,500-word article market. With $500 you get one to three articles and nothing left for links, technical fixes or reporting estimate. If you spend it on an expert instead, you get about two hours at the $100 to $300 hourly consulting range market.
Both uses are legitimate. A one-off audit or a short run of well-chosen articles can be worth the money. A promise of "full-service SEO" at $300 a month is where the trouble starts: an SEO specialist earns $60,000 to $80,000 a year market, and $300 buys only a sliver of that time.

Two thousand dollars: one workstream done properly
At this level a single workstream gets real attention. Entry-level legitimate SEO starts around $1,000 to $2,000 a month and covers technical fixes, Google Business Profile work, core on-page changes and a limited content plan market.
Here is a worked split. Four mid-tier articles at the top of the range cost $1,500 estimate. That leaves $500 for one editorial link, roughly the $509 that SEOs report paying for a single quality backlink market.
The catch is that this split leaves nothing for strategy, reporting or fixing the site. Choose one line and fund it fully. Sites in a quiet niche with a patient owner can grow on this budget. Sites in a competitive niche will see a rival outspend them within a quarter.
Five thousand dollars: content and links at once
Between $2,500 and $5,000 a month is where most B2B brands and growing companies live, and it is where SEO starts to compound, typically within six to nine months market. The reason is simple: the money is large enough to pay for content and link building in the same month.
A month could look like this. Four specialist articles at $450 to $1,500 each come to between $1,800 and $6,000 market. Agency retainers that bundle content run $3,000 to $15,000 for four to twelve pieces market. Add two guest posts at $200 to $600 each and the month is full market.
Compounding does not mean quick. A campaign at this level still needs six months before meaningful traction market. If leads must arrive next month, no budget on this list will do it.

The three budgets side by side
The table converts each budget into what it can fund in one month. Every cell is our arithmetic from the market rates above, so treat it as a sanity check for a proposal and not as a quote.
| Budget | Articles per month | Links per month | Expert hours | Fits |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| $500 | one to three | none | about two | audit or a short article run estimate |
| $2,000 | up to four | one | limited | one funded workstream estimate |
| $5,000 | four or more | two or more | dedicated | content plus link building estimate |
| Total | market range $500 to $5,000, tiers are ours estimate |
How to choose your tier
Start from the constraint you cannot move. If you have a capable in-house person and need direction, buy expert hours. If you have nobody, buy content and fixes, one line at a time.
A cheap plan that lists everything— the hours per line are too small to matterA first-month promise of top positions— no reputable agency guarantees a positionMonthly reports about impressions— ask for leads and enquiries from organic search
Then work through this list before you pay:
- Write down the single result you want in six months, such as enquiries from search.
- Ask for hours or deliverables per line, not a feature list.
- Ask what happens to the plan if the first three months show no movement.
- Agree the report format before the first invoice.
