Hire an SEO consultant or an agency: what you actually pay for

A consultant and an agency often cost about the same per month, so price will not settle the choice. What differs is who does the work and who carries the plan, and that is what this page prices out.

Which one is cheaper, a consultant or an agency?

Neither, on average. The retainer figures sit close together, and the label on the invoice tells you little about the total.

In the Ahrefs poll the most common agency retainer is $500 to $1,000 a month, and the most common consultant retainer is $2,501 to $5,000market. So the agency's typical price is lower, yet its average is high because a tail of large agencies pulls it up to $3,209estimate. The consultant's typical price is higher but sits in a tighter rangeestimate.

If you compare your quote to one headline average, you may be setting a small shop's price against a big one's.

What a retainer buys in each case

An agency retainer pays for capacity. A consultant retainer pays for judgment. Both bills can carry the same number while the work behind them looks nothing alike.

The cheapest route, a freelancer at $1,348 on average, works only if you already know what to ask formarket. We put it plainly: a freelancer executes a brief, and a consultant writes one.

Hourly, project or monthly: where each model costs less

Hourly billing suits a consultant's review, project billing suits a one-off audit or migration, and a monthly fee suits ongoing content. Picking the wrong model costs more than picking the wrong vendor.

Project fees show the widest spread. The common project price for freelancers is $101 to $250, for agencies $2,501 to $5,000 and for consultants $5,001 to $10,000market. A project is one deliverable with a defined end, so it is the easiest format to compare line by line.

A rough check for hourly work, assuming a consultant at $100 to $150 and a day and a half of review a month, gives $1,000 to $1,500estimate. That is cheaper than the average agency retainer, but it buys advice and no production.

What moves the price besides the label

Experience and market reach move the number more than the title does, so ask about both before you compare quotes.

  • Under two years in business — an average retainer of $1,540market.
  • Five to ten years in business — $3,648 a month, more than doublemarket.
  • Serving local clients — $1,557 a month, against $3,474 for worldwide workmarket.

A local plumber and an international software company do not need the same package, and the price gap reflects that. If a quote ignores your market, the vendor has not looked at it.

When an agency is the better pick

Choose an agency when you need output you cannot staff yourself: dozens of pages, technical fixes and reporting in one place. You are buying a team and a process, and that is worth paying for when volume is the bottleneck.

The agency fits best if you have no in-house marketer, a clear target and a budget that leaves room for content. It fits worst if the real gap is strategy, because a team will faithfully produce a plan nobody has tested.

When a consultant is the better pick

Choose a consultant when someone on your side can execute and you need a second opinion on what to execute first. A short engagement of audits and quarterly reviews is common hereestimate.

The risk is dependency on a single person. Ask what happens during their illness or holiday, and ask for the audit to be written down so you can hand it to someone else.

Five questions to ask before you sign

  1. Who will personally work on my site, by name and role?
  2. What do I receive each month, counted in pages and fixes?
  3. How do you report, and can I see a sample?
  4. What is the minimum term, and how do I leave?
  5. Which part of the plan depends on my team, and by when?

Vague answers to the first two settle the decision faster than any price comparison.
