How many blog posts a month does SEO need? What the data says
No single number makes SEO work, and Google sets no quota. Studies link higher volume to more traffic, so a small business can plan about four posts a month and spend the rest of its budget on refreshing older ones.

How many blog posts per month does SEO need?
SEO has no required number of posts, and Google publishes no quota market. For a small business, about four planned posts a month is a workable floor estimate.
The floor moves with your budget and your archive. A blog with fifty older posts can spend part of its month on refreshes. A new blog has nothing to refresh, so its posts have to carry the whole load.
Do more posts bring more organic traffic?
On average, yes. Sites that published 9 or more posts a month grew organic traffic by 20.1%, which is 3.6 times the growth of sites publishing 1 to 4 market. HubSpot's analysis of more than 13,500 companies found that four or more posts a week brought 3.5 times the traffic of less than one a week market.
Both results describe groups of companies, and companies that publish a lot usually also spend more on editing, links and promotion. Stratabeat does not publish its sample size.
Read the two numbers as a direction. Going from a handful of posts to a steady weekly rhythm goes with more traffic, and the studies say little about what one extra post is worth.
Does Google require a posting schedule?
Google requires no schedule. Its spokesperson said that publishing frequency alone does not make something spam and that posting every day is fine if you have new and relevant things to post market.
Google's own guidance points the other way as well. Its helpful-content page asks whether you produce lots of content on many different topics in hopes that some of it might perform well in search results market. A post written to fill a calendar slot answers that question badly.

How much does a monthly publishing plan cost?
A freelance 1,500-word post most often costs $250 to $399, the band chosen by 27% of 213 surveyed writers market. Ghostwritten blog posts run 25 to 40 cents per word market. On a 1,500-word post that is $375 to $600 estimate.
The table prices the writing only. Editing, images and publishing come on top.
| Posts per month | Writing cost per month | What the studies say | Fits when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Two | $500 to $798 estimate | Inside the baseline group of 1 to 4 posts market | Budget is tight and older posts need refreshing |
| Four | $1,000 to $1,596 estimate | Top of the baseline group of 1 to 4 posts market | You have a topic plan and one editor |
| Nine | $2,250 to $3,591 estimate | The group that grew traffic 3.6 times faster market | Sales can absorb more enquiries and quality holds |
| Sixteen | $4,000 to $6,384 estimate | Near the four-a-week group with 3.5 times the traffic market | A team of editors and a distribution routine exist |
Sixteen posts a month sit near four a week estimate. The cost of the last row is the reason most small businesses stop at the second or third.
Should you update old posts instead of writing new ones?
Often yes, once you have posts worth updating. HubSpot's optimized old posts gained an average 106% in monthly organic search views market. Portent tested 60 posts in three groups, and medium-effort updates grew ranking keywords by an average 211% within two months, with outliers removed market.
Two older cases point the same way. A single refresh lifted weekly traffic 55% on AdEspresso's blog market, and Backlinko's relaunch of one post raised its organic traffic 260.7% in 14 days market.
Older posts also carry most of a mature blog's traffic. At HubSpot, 76% of monthly blog views and 92% of blog leads came from older posts market. In a Databox survey, nearly half of experts said 61% to 80% of their organic traffic comes from old posts market.
How long before new posts show results?
New pages need months. Only 1.74% of newly published pages reached the top ten within a year in a study of one million URLs market.
A Semrush study of 28,000 new domains found that about 41% had a top-ten keyword after six months, yet only 4.2% of the qualified domains kept one for all 13 months market. Early rankings come and go, which is why a month-by-month traffic chart looks discouraging in the first half year.
Judge a cadence after two quarters of steady work estimate. Count enquiries from organic search as well as visits, because a small blog can grow visits and still bring no buyers.

How do you pick your own number?
Work from budget first, then cadence. Most agencies and freelancers price per post, so the arithmetic is short.
- Get the all-in price of one finished post from your writer and your editor.
- Divide your monthly content budget by that price to see the ceiling.
- List your ten best older posts by organic visits and schedule refreshes for them.
- Pick a cadence you can hold for a full half year, even in a busy month.
- Set a review date two quarters out and record enquiries from search, not only visits.
Quality checks belong in the same plan. Ask each writer how they use AI and who checks the numbers before a post goes live.
