Freelance writer or SEO agency for your blog: is the switch worth it?
Switching from a freelancer to an agency usually multiplies the monthly bill and adds strategy, editing and technical work. It pays off only when the blog is short of those things, not just short of words.

Is it worth switching from a freelance writer to an SEO agency?
It is worth it when the blog needs strategy, editing and technical work that one writer cannot supply, and it is not worth it when the only problem is that posts are late or dull. An agency retainer averages about $3,200 a month market. A freelancer writing four posts costs a fraction of that.
The decision comes down to what is missing from your blog today. If the missing piece is writing capacity, hire a second freelancer. If keywords, structure, internal links and measurement are missing, an agency sells exactly that bundle.
How much more does an agency cost than a freelancer?
Agency hourly rates run about $98.90 against $71.59 for freelancers market, a gap of roughly 38%. A second survey puts the premium at about 30% market. So per hour the difference is modest.
Per month it is not. A freelancer bills for posts, while an agency bills for a team, so the invoice grows even when the hourly rate barely moves. Retainer pricing is the industry norm, with 78.2% of providers billing that way market and 80% of agencies listing it among their favorite models market.
Most of the market is cheaper than the average suggests. Around 68.8% of SEO providers charge $2,000 a month or less market, and only 15% of agencies charge above $2,000 market. The headline average is pulled up by large agencies, so a small-agency quote can land well below it.

What does a freelance blog post cost?
A 1,500-word freelance post most often costs between $250 and $399, the band chosen by 27% of surveyed writers market. The Editorial Freelancers Association sets ghostwritten blog posts at $0.25 to $0.40 per word market. On a 1,500-word post that is $375 to $600 estimate.
Four posts a month therefore cost roughly $1,000 to $2,400 with a freelancer estimate. That range sits below the average agency retainer, and the retainer buys more than posts. The comparison only makes sense if you price the extra items too.
What does an agency add that a freelancer usually does not?
An agency adds topic research, editing, on-page fixes, reporting and someone accountable for the result. A freelancer delivers the article you commissioned, and the rest is your job.
That difference matters because the writing is not what limits most blogs. Only 13.9% of content marketers report strong results from their blog market, and just 22% of B2B marketers call their content marketing extremely or very successful market. If nine in ten blogs underperform, the fault usually lies in choice of topics and distribution.
A better writer improves the draft. A better plan changes which drafts get written. An agency sells the plan, and that is the only thing worth paying the premium for.
Side by side: what each option costs and covers
The table sets published prices next to what each option normally delivers. Each price is a market figure, so treat it as a benchmark for your own quotes.
| Option | Typical price | Usually covers | Fits when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Freelance post, 1,500 words | $250 to $399 market | One finished article | You already have a topic plan |
| Ghostwritten post by rate chart | $375 to $600 estimate | One finished article | You want an experienced writer |
| Freelance SEO, hourly | $71.59 an hour market | Advice or fixes by the hour | You need a short audit |
| Agency SEO, hourly | $98.90 an hour market | Strategy plus production | You need a scoped project |
| Agency retainer, monthly | $3,209 a month market | Plan, content, fixes, reporting | Nobody in-house owns SEO |
Will an agency get results faster?
Not by itself. New pages take months to rank whoever writes them, and only 1.74% of newly published pages reach the top ten within a year market.
A Semrush study of new domains found that about 41% ranked in the top ten after six months, yet only 4.2% of the qualified domains kept a top-ten keyword for the full 13 months market. Early rankings are unstable, and an agency cannot skip that stage.
What an agency can do is shorten the wasted time: pick topics with a real chance to rank, and drop the ones without. Judge the switch after two quarters of work, and ask for a count of leads from organic search.

How do you check the work after the switch?
Ask both a freelancer and an agency how they use AI. Around 92.4% of bloggers now use AI in their writing market, and 81% of B2B marketing teams use generative AI tools market. Nearly everyone does, so the useful question is what they check by hand and who signs off.
Before you switch, run this checklist:
- Write down the result you want from search in six months, such as enquiries.
- Ask the agency to list its deliverables for each month.
- Ask who writes, who edits and who is accountable for rankings.
- Keep the freelancer's best drafts as a style reference for the agency.
- Agree a review date and the exit terms before you sign.
Frequently asked questions
Is an SEO agency better than a freelance writer for blog content?
An agency is better when the blog lacks strategy, editing and technical work, and a freelancer is better when you only need articles written to a plan you already have. The agency premium is about 30% to 38% per hour market, and the monthly bill is larger because a team is involved.
How much does an SEO agency cost compared with a freelancer?
Agencies average about $3,200 a month market. Freelance posts cost $250 to $399 in the most common band market, so four posts a month usually come in well below a retainer.
When should I switch from a freelancer to an agency?
Switch when posts are published on time but the blog still produces no enquiries, because that points to missing strategy and not missing words. Most blogs fall into that group, since only 13.9% report strong results market.
How long does it take to see results after switching?
Plan for at least two quarters before judging. Only 1.74% of new pages reach the top ten within a year market, so early movement is a signal to track and not a verdict.
Should I ask an agency whether it uses AI to write?
Yes, and ask the same of a freelancer. AI writing tools are used by 92.4% of bloggers market, so the question to settle is which checks a human performs and how errors are corrected.
