Can one freelance writer run a company blog? When you need a backup
One freelancer can run a small blog, and a full-time one delivers about seven expert articles a month. The risk sits in the gap when that person gets ill, takes a bigger client or goes silent, because finding a replacement takes months.

Can one freelance writer run a company blog?
Yes, while the blog stays small and the writer stays available. A full-time freelancer writes about seven expert articles a month market, and agencies call four to twelve articles a month a reasonable start for a commercial site market.
The weak spot is the single point of failure. The skill of the writer matters less than whether anyone else can pick up the next article when that person is out. This piece asks a narrower question than the freelance writer versus agency comparison: how much spare capacity a one-writer blog needs, and what it costs to go without.
How many articles can one writer deliver in a month?
About seven, if they write for you full time. The same media group puts an expert article at two to three working days market, and a Habr author describes a single article taking a week once revisions are counted market.
| Task | Typical time | Who reports it |
|---|---|---|
| Expert article | two to three working days | E.K.G media group market |
| Article including revisions | up to a week | RapidwebMe on Habr market |
| Post of about 1,300 words by an in-house marketer | 3 hours 20 minutes of writing | Orbit Media, 1,042 content marketers market |
| Post of 500 words | one to two hours | HubSpot State of Inbound market |
The rows measure different things. Orbit and HubSpot count the writing session of a marketer, while E.K.G and Habr count a finished piece with research and edits. Seven a month is therefore a ceiling for one person who has no other clients. Ten posts at 3 hours 20 minutes of drafting each come to about 33 hours before any research or revision estimate.

How many articles does a blog need each month?
Four to twelve is the usual starting range for a commercial site market. Two other sources give four to eight for mid-competition niches and fifteen to thirty for high-competition ones market, and agencies name ten as the minimum for steady traffic growth market.
| Situation | Articles a month | Can one full-time writer cover it? |
|---|---|---|
| Starting range for most commercial sites | 4 to 12 market | Only the lower half estimate |
| Mid-competition niche | 4 to 8 market | Yes, with little slack estimate |
| Steady growth threshold | 10 or more market | No, it needs a second writer estimate |
| High-competition niche | 15 to 30 market | No, it needs two to four writers estimate |
Check your own niche against these rows before you sign a retainer. Whoever you hire, use the checklist on how to choose an SEO partner, and add one question of your own: who writes when the main author is out?
What does it cost when your only writer disappears?
Months, in the cases that were written up. Gate, a PR agency, went from more than 700 responses to 30 portfolios and 22 tested authors in two months market. E.K.G describes a search that dragged on for a year and a half market.
The yield of such a search is low. Of the 22 authors Gate tested, 17 turned out irresponsible or untalented market, and a Habr author reports that about 99% of candidates are filtered out when roughly 100 responses arrive in a day market. Gate also lists missed deadlines and refusals to revise as frequent author problems market. An agency author adds that a freelancer working outside an exchange can vanish after prepayment, with no insurance against a blown deadline market.
The consequence is plain: the search for a second writer cannot start on the day the first one goes silent.
When is a standby writer enough, and when do you need two regular ones?
A standby writer is enough for a blog that needs up to about seven articles a month, and a blog above ten a month needs two regular writers. The split follows the capacity of one person against the agency floor estimate.
A standby covers emergencies and overflow. A second regular writer owns a fixed share of the monthly plan. The standby costs little to keep, and the second regular costs a full share of the plan, so the choice depends on the volume you actually publish. Four steps set a standby up:
- Commission one paid test article from a second writer while the first is healthy.
- Plan topics ahead so the standby has a written brief on the first day.
- Put the style guide, source rules and past articles in one shared folder.
- Give the standby one real article each quarter to keep the relationship warm.
The test article is the cheap part. It shows how the second writer handles a brief before you depend on them. If your audience is small and does not search much, our piece on what still works for SaaS buyers who are not searching covers where to spend limited writing hours.

Does writer capacity matter for AI answers too?
Yes, because AI assistants lean on recently updated pages. Ahrefs analysed 16.975 million citations and found AI-cited pages 25.7% fresher than organic results market. Seer Interactive found that 75% of the pages cited by ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity had been updated within the last year market.
Refreshing old articles is a second job next to new ones. A blog whose only writer spends every hour on new posts has nobody to keep the old pages current, which bears on whether to stop blogging because AI cites forums. Capacity decides whether the pages AI could cite stay fresh enough to be cited.
Frequently asked questions
What happens to a blog if the only writer disappears?
It stops publishing until a replacement is found. Agencies that documented the search report two months for Gate market and up to a year and a half for E.K.G market. A standby writer arranged in advance removes most of that gap.
How many articles a month can one freelancer write?
About seven expert articles at full time market. A freelancer with other clients delivers fewer, so ask for a monthly number in writing.
How long does it take to find a replacement writer?
Months. Gate screened candidates for two months and tested 22 authors market. Most of them failed, which is why the search is slow.
Is a backup writer the same as a second regular writer?
No. A backup takes emergencies and overflow, while a second regular writer carries a fixed share of the plan. Our rule of thumb is that a blog above ten articles a month needs two regular writers estimate.
Do AI assistants care how often a blog publishes?
They show a preference for fresher pages, with AI-cited URLs 25.7% fresher than organic results market. None of the studies used here measure publishing frequency itself, so keeping old pages current is the safer reading.
