Should you stop blogging because AI cites Reddit? What the data says
No, stopping the blog is the weaker move. Reddit is a top-ranked source in several trackers, but its share of ChatGPT citations is small and unstable, and most citations about a brand point to sites the brand does not own.

Should a company stop blogging because AI answers cite Reddit?
No. Reddit is a major source in some trackers, but the data does not show that a forum replaces a company site, and the shares move too fast to build a plan on one month of numbers. The better reading is that your blog and the places where people discuss you do different jobs.
Two things get confused here. One is where AI engines pull text from. The other is where a company can place its own words without being removed. A thread on Reddit is cited because strangers wrote it, and a branded account pushing the same message is treated as spam by the community.
How often do AI answers actually cite Reddit?
It depends on the engine, and the same engine gives different numbers in different studies. Reddit tops or nearly tops cross-engine rankings, while ChatGPT alone shows it in a small slice of visible citations.
| Source | Engine | Reddit's measured share | Window |
|---|---|---|---|
| Peec AI | Five engines combined | Rank #1 of all domains market | Study of 30 million sources |
| LLM Pulse | Five engines combined | 12.34%, rank #2 behind YouTube market | 28-day rolling |
| Profound | ChatGPT | 2.4% of about 700,000 citations market | Three months |
| Discovered Labs | ChatGPT | 0.35% of 144,284 citations market | Two months |
| LLM Pulse | Perplexity | 6.0%, rank #1 market | 7-day rolling |
The gap between 2.4% and 0.35% for the same engine comes from method estimate. Discovered Labs counts only citations a user can see, and it adds that Reddit fills about 27% of ChatGPT's search slots behind the scenes market. That second figure comes from one source, so we treat it as a lead and not as a fact.
Why do Reddit's citation numbers swing so much?
Because engines change how they pick sources, and trackers measure different things. The swings are large enough that any single snapshot misleads.
In ChatGPT, Reddit appeared in roughly 60% of tracked responses in early August 2025 and in roughly 10% by mid-September market. A year later, Promptwatch recorded Reddit falling from 3.83% to 0.52% of ChatGPT Search citations, an 86.4% relative drop market. Promptwatch itself called that figure provisional and could not rule out a collection problem on its side.
Perplexity shows the same instability. Profound put Reddit near 24% of Perplexity citations in January 2026 market, while LLM Pulse measured 6.0% in a seven-day window ending 13 October 2026 market. The two trackers use different prompts, so the gap does not prove a collapse.
A company that stopped publishing in September 2025 because Reddit looked unbeatable would have bet on a source that lost most of its ChatGPT share within six weeks. We covered a similar shift in what makes ChatGPT cite one company over another, where the picture also changes by engine.

What share of citations about a brand point to its own site?
A small share, and the exact figure depends on how the study defines "own". Two independent datasets agree that third-party pages carry most of the weight.
Trakkr analysed 337,000 citations across 882 brands and found that 98.16% pointed to third-party pages, leaving 1.84% for brand domains market. An academic study of 167,551 citations across 128 brands, 13 languages and 12 markets found 85.7% third-party and 14.3% brand-owned market.
Wikipedia is the biggest single outside source in both datasets: 9.6% of citations in Trakkr's data, and 5,800 of 167,551 citations in the academic one market. Reddit has only 619 citations in the academic sample market.
Read this carefully. These numbers describe questions about brands, such as reputation and reviews. They do not say that a company blog is ignored. A page on your own site can still be the source of a direct fact, as long as the page states it clearly. Pages with plain, self-contained answers follow the approach in SEO content versus AI-cited content.
Can a company safely post on Reddit?
Only with restraint, and with moderators on your side. Reddit has no single rule for brands, and each subreddit sets its own.
The common guideline is roughly 90% genuine participation to 10% mention of your own product or content market. Newer practitioner advice says that is too generous and that successful brand accounts promote in under 5% of their posts market.
Moderators decide. Penalties escalate from removed posts to shadow bans to near-permanent subreddit bans and account suspension estimate. UniLink notes there is no corporate appeal process once a moderator acts.
So Reddit works as a place to answer real questions under your name when you actually know the topic. It does not work as a replacement publishing channel, and an unlisted account that only links to your site gets removed.

What should a company do with its blog and with forums?
Keep the blog as the source of your facts, and take part in forum threads as an expert who answers questions. Neither channel replaces the other.
- Publish pages that state one checkable fact per section, each with a source.
- Find the three or four subreddits where your buyers already ask questions.
- Read each community's rules and message the moderators before mentioning a product.
- Answer questions with substance and add a link only when it is the best resource.
- Check what ChatGPT says about your brand once a month, since the shares above move.
The monthly check is quick: check your brand in ChatGPT with a fixed list of buyer questions and compare the answers against the previous month.
The same logic applies when you pay someone. Run any agency through the questions that filter out weak bidders, and add one: which sources does the agency expect to be cited from, and how will it measure that? A plan built on a single forum carries the swings shown above.
For publishing pace, our view is that a regular schedule matters more than chasing the platform of the month estimate. The volume side is covered in how many blog posts a month SEO needs.
Frequently asked questions
Should my company stop blogging if AI answers mostly cite Reddit?
No. Reddit is #1 in one 30-million-source study and #2 at 12.34% in another tracker market, yet it holds only 0.35% to 2.4% of visible ChatGPT citations market. The shares move too much to justify dropping the blog.
How much of ChatGPT's citations go to Reddit?
Between 0.35% and 2.4% of visible citations in two studies from late 2025 market. Reddit's ChatGPT share also fell from about 60% to about 10% of tracked responses in 2025 market, so a single reading is unreliable.
How many citations about a brand come from its own website?
Between 1.84% and 14.3% in two independent datasets, so most citations point to other sites market. Wikipedia is the largest single outside source in both.
Is it safe for a business to promote itself on Reddit?
Only in small doses. The usual guideline is about 10% promotion at most, and practitioners now suggest under 5% for brand accounts market. Each subreddit's moderators set the rules and can ban an account permanently.
Do I need to track Reddit in AI answers?
Yes, as one input among several. Because Reddit's share on Perplexity measured about 24% in one tracker and 6.0% in another market, track your own brand answers monthly and compare against your blog's pages.
